How To Buy A Loft Bed (Bunk Bed)

by: Mike Barus

Individuals of all ages choose to invest in a loft bed or bunk bed for their home. This classic childhood sleeper is quickly becoming a fun, inventive way for ?tweens, teens, college students, and young adult hipsters to maximize their space without having to roll out a sleeping bag every night. When it comes time to shop for furniture, look to stores that specialize in bunk beds or loft beds.

First things first, there is a major difference between bunk beds and loft beds. Bunk beds are the most common form of alternative bedding, with an upper bunk stacked above a lower bunk. Some bunk beds stack two same-sized mattresses horizontally, while others stack a twin bed above a full size bed or even a futon that can serve as a larger sleeping or living area. Finally, other bunk beds create a playhouse type environment, with a top bunk running horizontally overtop of a vertically running bottom bunk. Some of these alternative bunk beds include stair steps and even slides, allowing the beds perfect for younger individuals.

Loft beds feature elevated platforms for sleeping, leaving much needed floor space below to place a desk, couch, or entertainment center to provide extra space for living. Generally associated with cramped dorm rooms, loft beds are becoming increasingly popular with teenagers who feel cramped in smaller rooms and want to expand their livable space. Also, young adults are also elect to choose loft beds in first apartments that may have less than desirable sleeping quarters. Think of loft beds like the new, hipper version of the classic Murphy bed.

When shopping for a bunk bed or loft bed, first consider the person that will be sleeping in the bed. For children, consider safety above all other aspects of the bed. Teenagers or young adults may want to focus on the size or the style of the bed more so than safety worries. When dealing with children, be sure that the child is ready to upgrade to a ?grown up? bed before making the move. Children should be at least 35 inches long or two years of age before he or she should be moved to a bunk bed. Also, ground rules should be made regarding the proper conduct involving the bunk bed, since most injuries occur due to roughhousing or horseplay.

Regardless of your age, you should ensure the bunk bed or loft bed you choose has two sets of guardrails and a sturdy ladder that can support your weight. The guard rails are critical, even though your bed may reside next to a wall. More so with children, but occasional with teens or adults, bunk beds or loft beds without a guardrail next to the wall can cause the sleeper to slip between the bed and the wall during their sleep. Also, a guardrail on the other side of the bed is critical, since anyone can fall out of a bed while asleep.

For children, the guard rail should be no more than three and a half inches above the mattress. If the guard rail is too far away from the mattress, the occupant can slip between the mattress and the rail, resulting in a fall. Also, the guard rail should run at least five inches above the mattress to prevent the occupant from rolling over top of the rail.

Keep in mind there are a variety of bunk beds and loft beds on the market. Younger kids may enjoy the activity themed bunk beds, while teens may desire a bed that incorporates a loft instead of a bottom bunk. Also, the size of the room is directly associated with size of the bunk bed or loft bed. Although having a double or queen size bed may be luxurious in comparison to a tiny twin, but carefully think of the available space before choosing.

About The Author

Mike Barus specializes in loft beds/bunk beds find out more at http://www.loft-beds-i.com.

Wood Vs. Metal Loft Beds (Bunk Beds)

by: Donna Somerkin

If you are in the market for loft beds or bunk beds, a major choice is wood versus metal. Depending on the overall look and size you desire, you will want to choose a differently constructed bed. Although both materials are both sturdy and safe, many individuals choose either metal or wood when searching for the optimum bed to fit the room.

Most older bunk beds are made of wood, and are generally easier to make safety modifications and enhancements. Also, the price of wooden bunk beds may be more economical, especially if you are shopping at second hand stores or using a bed previously used by a friend or family member. Furthermore, wooden bunk beds can be easily repaired, painted, stripped, or stained to create a completely different look for differing tastes.

Metal bunk beds are usually made of tubular metal and thought to be a classic kid?s type of bedding. How many times have you seen a red or white metal bunk bed in a child?s bedroom? Metal bunk beds made in recent years are built to the set safety requirements, but if any safety requirements are not up to par, emendations are much more difficult to make.

When looking at loft beds, the newer, stylish beds are made of metal. Additionally, metal loft beds take up less space so that tight spaces will not be further infringed by bulky metal creations. Also, metal beds allow a greater amount of decoration than wooden beds, so these are quite popular with the feminine crowd. Additionally, a change in style requires nothing more than a can of spray paint in the new and improved color.

Wooden loft beds are most associated with college dormitories, where loft beds built of raw two by fours are king. These beds can be found around every corner of campus come move-in day, so keep your pennies for things like books and purchase a used loft bed. You may even gain a couple new phone numbers, since most college co-eds use their loft beds as a huge message pad. The plus side of a wooden loft bed is that you will save a great deal of money on paper!

Whatever type of bunk bed or loft bed you choose to purchase, ensure the bed is safe. It does not matter if you are two, twelve, or twenty, safety is still important when entrusting your bodily safety while you sleep. A teenager can roll out of bed just as easily as a toddler, so be sure all beds have the proper guard rails and safety precautions. Generally, the choice between wood and metal bunk beds or loft beds is completely personal and depends on the space and the style.

About The Author

Donna Somerkin specializes in loft beds/bunk beds find out more at http://www.u-loft-beds.com.

How Exactly Do Septic Tanks Work?

by: Scott Leahy

A sewerage drain field and a septic tank make up a small scale sewage treatment system. A septic tank is basically a rectangular shaped underground receptacle for wastewater. It is watertight, made of concrete, and consists of tanks that are divided into chambers. The first chamber has twice the volume as the second and the majority of the organic solid matter, referred to as sludge, gets settled here. The second chamber further purifies the wastewater.

The septic tank collects wastewater from toilets, showers, sinks, etc. Due to the absence of a current the sludge quickly settles down to the tank floor. Anaerobic bacterial digestive activity on the sludge leads to the generation of methane and carbon dioxide; the sludge is stabilized and does not rot anymore. Particles of stabilized sludge stay settled, some may float to the top as scum.

A septic tank should be constructed such that there is maximum contact time with the microorganisms so as to enable swifter digestion of the sludge. This is achieved by placing the inlet, overflow, and outlet diagonal to each other and by making the streams flow in vertically placed pipes.

The semi-purified water moves to the second chamber via the overflows that are constructed such that the upward motion of water prevents larger particles from flowing into the second chamber. The feeding, digestion, and settlement of organic matter continues in the second chamber. The retention time in the second chamber is half that of the first chamber because of its size and the fact that the amount of organic matter to treat is less. The outlet is constructed in the diagonal corner to the overflow.

The treated wastewater is directed to a drain field, also known as a seepage field, where any impurities that still exist get decomposed naturally, the water is taken up by the plant root system or it may even become a part of the groundwater. The large sized drainage field is required if the soil is not very porous. A septic system can be made to work entirely by using gravitational forces; at some places, however, a pump may be required to overcome topographical limitations.

The rate of sludge generation in septic tanks is around 0.05 cubic yards every year for an individual. Septic tanks need to be emptied every few years so that there is enough reaction space for the microorganisms to attack the wastewater and for the sludge to settle.

The septic tank may be emptied every 5-7 years depending upon the amount of wastewater it processes. The tank is emptied using an exhauster truck manned by trained personnel. The sludge that is sucked into the exhauster truck is released into public waste water treatment plants, sanitary landfills, or sludge drying beds.

Properly digested sludge can be used as a natural fertilizer; this is possible only if no fresh wastewater is added to the tank for at least one week.

The design of the septic tank should be such that the wastewater always flows in its designated path and no short circuits in the water flow occur. T-pipe-connectors with inflow and outflow openings under the water level should be used for inlet, overflow, and outlet pipes. This prevents the floating scum from clogging the pipes. A grease trap should be provided for the wastewater inflow pipe.

About The Author

Scott Leahy recommends you visit The Laundry Alternative to learn about septic tanks.
Landscape Gardening Tips

by: Melissa Albright

Landscape gardening has often been associated with the painting of a picture. Your art-work teacher has told you that a good picture should have a point of interest, and the rest of the points simply go to make the piece more beautiful. So in landscape gardening there must be a picture in the gardener's mind of what he desires the whole to be.

From this study we will be able to work out a little theory of landscape gardening.

Let?s start with the lawn. A good extent of open lawn space is always beautiful. It is restful. It adds a feeling of space to even small grounds. So we might generalize and say that it is good to keep open lawn space. If someone to cover his lawn with a lot of trees, with little flower beds here and there, the general effect is choppy and fussy. It is a bit like an over-dressed person. One's yard has lost all individuality. A single tree or a small group is not a bad arrangement on the lawn. Do not center the tree or trees. Let them drop into the background. Make a pleasing side feature with them. In choosing trees you must keep in mind a number of things. You should not choose an overpowering tree; the tree should be of good shape, with something interesting about its bark, leaves, flowers or fruit. While the poplar is a rapid grower, it sheds its leaves early and is left standing, bare and ugly, before the fall is old. Mind you, there are places where a row or double row of Lombardy poplars is very effective. But I think you'll agree with me that one lone poplar is not. The catalpa is quite lovely by itself. Its leaves are broad, its flowers attractive, the seed pods which cling to the tree until away into the winter, add a bit of picture. The bright berries of the ash, the brilliant foliage of the sugar maple, the blossoms of the tulip tree, the bark of the white birch, and the leaves of the copper beech are beauty points to consider.

Placement makes a difference in the selection of a tree. Suppose the lower portion of the yard is a bit low and moist, then the spot is ideal for a willow. Don't group trees together which look awkward. A long-looking poplar does not go with a nice rounded little tulip tree. A juniper, so neat and prim, would look silly beside a spreading chestnut. You must keep proportion and suitability in mind.

I would never advise planting a group of evergreens close to a house, and in the front yard. The effect is very gloomy. Houses surrounded are over capped and are not only gloomy to live in, but truly unhealthy. The requisite inside a house is sunlight and plenty of it.

As trees are chosen because of certain good points, shrubs should be also. In a clump I would plant some that bloom early, some that bloom late, some for the beauty of their fall foliage, some for the color of their bark and others for the fruit. Some spireas and the forsythia bloom early. The red bark of the dogwood makes for a bit of color all winter, and the red berries of the barberry cling to the shrub well into the winter.

Certain shrubs are good to use for hedge purposes. A hedge is prettier usually than a fence. The Californian privet is excellent for this purpose. Osage orange, Japan barberry, buckthorn, Japan quince, and Van Houtte's spirea are other shrubs that make great hedges.

I forgot to say that in tree and shrub selection it is usually better to choose those of the locality where you live. Unusual and foreign plants do worse and often harmonize but poorly with their new setting.

Landscape gardening may follow along very formal lines or along informal lines. The first would have straight paths, straight rows in stiff beds, everything, as the name tells, perfectly formal. The other method is, of course, the exact opposite. There are danger points in each.

The formal arrangement is likely to look too stiff; the informal, too fussy, too wiggly. As far as paths go, keep this in mind, that a path should always lead somewhere. Its job is to direct one to a definite place. Now, straight, even paths are not unpleasing if the effect is to be a formal garden. The danger in the curved path is an abrupt curve, a whirligig effect. It is far better for you to stick to straight paths unless you can make a really beautiful curve. No one can tell you how to do this.

Garden paths may be gravel, dirt, or grass. You may see grass paths in some very lovely gardens. I doubt, however, if they would serve you nearly as well in your small garden. Your garden areas are so limited that they should be re-spaded each season, and the grass paths are a great bother in this work. Of course, a gravel path makes a fine appearance, but again you may not have gravel at your command. It is possible for any of you to dig out the path for two feet. Then put in six inches of stone. Over this, pack in the dirt, rounding it slightly toward the center of the path. There should never be depressions through the central part of paths, since these form convenient places for water to stand. The under layer of stone makes a natural drainage system.

A building often needs the help of vines or flowers or both to tie it to the yard in such a way that it forms a pleasant whole. Vines lend themselves well to this work. It is better to plant a perennial vine, and let it form a permanent part of your landscape scheme. The Virginia creeper, wistaria, honeysuckle, a climbing rose, the clematis and trumpet vine are all satisfactory.

Close your eyes and picture a house of natural color, that mellow gray of the weathered shingles. Now add to this old house a purple wistaria. Can you see the beauty of it?

Of course, the morning-glory is an annual vine, as is the moon-vine and wild cucumber. Now, these have their special function. For often, it is necessary to cover an ugly thing for just a time, until better things and better times come. The annual is 'the chap' for this work.

Flowers go well along the side of the building, or bordering a walk. In general, though, keep the front lawn space open and unbroken by beds. What lovelier in early spring than a bed of daffodils close to the house? Hyacinths and tulips, too, form a blaze of glory. These are little or no bother, and start the spring right. Some make bulbs an exception to the rule of unbroken front lawn. Snowdrops and crocuses planted through the lawn are beautiful. They do not disturb the general effect, but just blend with the whole. One expert bulb gardener says to take a basketful of bulbs in the fall, walk about your grounds, and just drop bulbs out here and there. Wherever the bulbs drop, plant them. Small bulbs as those we plant in lawns should be in groups of four to six. Daffodils may be planted, too.

The place for a flower garden is generally at the side or rear of the house. The backyard garden is a lovely idea, is it not? Who would want to leave a beautiful looking front yard, turn the corner of a house, and find a dump heap? Not I. The flower garden may be laid out formally in neat little beds, or it may be more careless, hit-or-miss sort. Both have their good points. Great masses of bloom are attractive.

You should have in mind some notion of the blending of color. Nature does not consider this at all, and still gets wondrous effects. This is because of the tremendous amount of her perfect background of green, and the limitlessness of her space, while we are confined at the best to relatively small areas. We should not blind people's eyes with clashes of colors which do not at close range blend well. In order to break up extremes of colors you can always use masses of white flowers, or something like mignonette, which is in effect green.

Finally, let?s sum up our landscape lesson. The grounds are a setting for the house or buildings. Open, free lawn spaces, a tree or a proper group well placed, flowers which do not clutter up the front yard, groups of shrubbery these are points to be remembered. The paths should lead somewhere, and be either straight or well curved. If you start with a formal garden, you should not mix the informal with it before the work is done.

About The Author

Melissa Albright is the webmaster for the website Know More Get More http://www.knowmoregetmore.com/landscape Giving you the information you need.

Shopping for a Mattress? Get In the NOW!

by: Neil Teasdale

It still amazes me to see that in almost every walk of life, consumers are looking for the latest and greatest on the market. Except when shopping for a mattress, it still seems that people are drawn to the 'same old same old' one mattress fits all coils and springs. Ouch! But that's not the big kicker; the big deal comes when you actually price these mattresses. To get a top quality coils and springs mattress you have to pay between $1500US -$3000US to get the comfort levels you want and then you are still really buying an expensive foundation with a memory foam pillow top, which is what is providing the comfort you feel. So, let's say you spend $2000US, you now own a 100lb wooden box filled with coils and springs and what sold you was the $200US pillow top.

So why not just take the time to really see what options are out there? You will find so many other choices that take advantage of our newest technology, are not only half the price but provide a much healthier environment for you to sleep. All the new types of mattresses and beds are specifically designed sleep systems that provide the right support to minimize pressure to acceptable levels for different body types and sleeping postures, maintaining back and spine alignment. The coils and springs mattresses can only say this when they come with the memory foam pillow top. The coils and springs can't really "fill in the gaps" to support the parts of your body that do not sink into the coils, such as your lower back.

Coils and springs mattresses' biggest claim to fame is that the coils work independently so when you move, your partner doesn't. Great, but how much does that matter if you're not comfortable and you wake up tired and stiff? And in all honesty, I don't know anyone who actually "bowls" in bed.

So what are the options out there? There are four different types of new technology sleep systems that really are a great bang for the buck and are very affordable and provide many health and convenient benefits compared to coils and springs.

1) Air Mattress Beds - Air Mattress Beds cradle and cushion your body, providing more even weight distribution without the poking and prodding possible from a standard coil spring mattress. Easy to use handheld controls and a state of the art ultra-quiet air inflation system allow each sleeper to quickly adjust the firmness of their side of the air bed to the perfect comfort level, with just the touch of a button. Imagine, now couples can individually adjust each side of the air bed to the exact firmness and comfort level each partner prefers. (Tip: Look for horizontal baffling and contoured foam edges for quality construction.)

2) Adjustable Beds - Now any sincere mattress salesman won't push the watching TV or reading in bed, it's not something that we should recommend. But with today's lifestyles this has become a normal way of life for some people. So if that's the case then you really should think about doing it right! With the touch of a button, adjustable beds move into hundreds of relaxing positions. All without creating pressure, stress or strain on your body. Touch a button again and experience a new concept in comfort, while your own personal massage system helps to relieve tired, sore muscles, and reduce everyday tension and fatigue. Encourage restful sleep through relaxation. (Tip: Concentrate on the frame construction, don't fall for the "mattress included" it's rarely of any quality.)

3) Latex Beds - Latex mattresses provide the most comfortable sleep surface in the world. Already immensely popular in Europe, Latex Mattresses are beginning to boom here in the United States. More and more Americans are learning about the tremendous advantages of Latex Mattresses everyday. The Talalay Process produces the highest quality, most resilient and consistent latex foam in the industry. Its consistent cell structure and exact density result in the most even firmness and feel possible. You can also buy Natural latex products. (Tip: Look for US made foam with layered construction, as this gives you quality foam and creates a variety of comfort levels to choose from.)

4) Memory Foam Beds - Well I think the word is out on this one, I'm sure you've heard all the NASA explanations of why this is used in the Space Shuttle and seen the "handprint" pictures. But, in case you haven't, Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattresses utilize amazing, space age and NASA developed Visco Elastic Memory Foam. Visco Elastic Memory Foam is temperature sensitive. It actually reacts to the heat produced by your body, conforming to your body in a way no other material can. Where your body is making the most contact with the memory foam, the foam reacts and becomes softer. Where your body is making less contact, the foam stays cooler and remains more firm. The result is pressure being evenly distributed throughout the sleeper's body, leading to fewer pressure points and a more restorative sleep. (Tip: Again, look out for problem European foam; US made Sensus with layered construction for the same quality and comfort level benefits.)

All of these new age sleep systems can be purchased for a fraction of what a coils and springs mattress goes for and depending on the mattress, you can adjust the foam layers to personalize your comfort level as you please. And don't forget about the many major sleep benefits from all the sleep system technology. You just can't miss, if you have to purchase a mattress or sleep system, you owe it to yourself to check these out, not only for your health but for your pocketbook too, ouch again!

Tune in to my next articles where I'll break down what to look for in each of the new age sleep systems.

About The Author

Neil Teasdale

Why Sleep On Coils and Springs When You Can Sleep On Air?

We provide the Highest Quality, Luxury and Convenience of air mattress beds, adjustable beds, latex beds and memory foam beds, including mattress toppers and pillows.

Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds, for more information click: http://www.cloud9airmattressbeds.com

[ Submitted with ArticleSubmitter Pro - http://www.articles.com/article_submitter_pro.shtml

customercare@cloud9airmattressbeds.com

How many
times a week do you wake up where you can't figure out if
you're getting up or going to bed or you wake up with a
headache, numb leg or that stiff neck that goes right to
the shoulder blade and you can't look left or right, what's
that about? After struggling through a tough day, no way do
you have anything left for family play time in the evening.

There's a time proven, simple method to regain back and
enjoy your full days, but most of us definitely take it for
granted, SLEEP! "I'll sleep when I sleep." If we all could
shift this mindset to, "I need and enjoy my sleep," That
would be a huge step in the right direction. As we age,
depending on how "gracefully," we develop certain health
issues, maybe not serious but nagging enough to stop you
from playing catch with JR. or piggybacking your Little
Princess. Many times we look to doctors and cures for nagging
problems that just might be related to your particular
sleep habits.

So, what does the Sleep in America poll tell us about the
connection between sleep, health and aging? "We reaffirm
what we know from the epidemiology of aging that there is a
very strong correlation between common medical conditions
and a predisposition to sleep disturbances," says Daniel
Foley, an epidemiologist at the National Institute on Aging.
"A person may have several medical conditions that they're
seeing their doctor about and they may be getting treatment,
but they don't feel they're getting better. What may go
unrecognized is a tremendous amount of sleep disturbance and
daytime sleepiness. What may go overlooked is a major sleep
disorder that may be complicating treatment of the other
conditions.

"The poll results show we need to educate the public and
healthcare professionals about the connection between sleep,
health and aging."

Granted not all health issues can be prevented, but we
shoulddo what's in our control to remain health conscious
day and night. Maintaining health can prevent many of those
nagging old problems. What's the use of working out in the
morning, jogging at lunch, eating right all day then
crashing at 3:00am on that busted imitation "La-Z-Boy"
using your cat as a pillow? Oh! There's that headache, numb
leg, still neck cycle again!!

There are some very simple things you can do to make your
sleep more beneficial for you. You've probably seen these
many times in many forms but this time, it's time to start!
You're going to pin this article up and make an effort to
change your poor sleep habits.

"	Sleep is as important as food and air. Quantity and
quality are very important. Most adults need between 7.5 to
8.5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. If you press the snooze
button on the alarm in the morning you are not getting
enough sleep.

"	Keep regular hours. Try to go to bed at the same time and
get up at the same time every day. Getting up at the same
time is most important. Getting bright light, like the sun,
when you get up will also help. Try to go to bed only when
you are sleepy. Bright light in the morning at a regular
time should help you feel sleepy at the same time every
night.

"	Stay away from stimulants like caffeine. This will help
you get deep sleep which is most refreshing. If you take any
caffeine, take it in the morning. Avoid all stimulants in
the evening, including chocolate, caffeinated sodas, and
caffeinated teas. They will delay sleep and increase
arousals during the night.

"	Use the bed for sleeping and sex. Avoid watching TV or
using laptop computers. Know that reading in bed can be a
problem if the material is very stimulating and you read
with a bright light. If it helps to read before bed make
sure you use a very small wattage bulb to read. A 15 watt
bulb should be enough.

"	Avoid bright light around the house before bed. Using
dimmer switches in living rooms and bathrooms before bed can
be helpful. (Dimmer switches can be set to maximum
brightness for morning routines.)

"	Don't stress if you feel you are not getting enough sleep.
It will just make matters worse. Know you will sleep
eventually, no pressure.

"	Avoid exercise near bedtime. No exercise at least 3 hours
before bed.

"	Don't go to bed hungry. Have a light snack, avoid a heavy
meal before bed.

"	Bedtime routines are helpful for good sleep. Keep routines
on your normal schedule. A cup of herbal tea an hour before
bed can begin a routine.

"	Avoid looking at the clock if you wake up in the middle of
the night. It can cause anxiety. This is very difficult for
most of us, so turn the clock away so you would have to
turn it to see the time. You may decide not to make the effort
and go right back to sleep.

"	If you can't get to sleep for over 30 minutes get out of
bed and do something boring in dim light till you are
sleepy.

"	Keep your bedroom at comfortable temperature. Not too warm
and not too cold. Cooler is better than warmer.

"	If you have problems with noise in your environment you
can use a white noise generator. An old fan will work or you
can listen to soft music on a timer.

"	Know that the "night cap" has a price. Alcohol may help
you to get to sleep but it will cause you to wake up
throughout the night. You may not notice it. (It is worse if
you have sleep apnea because the alcohol makes the apnea
worse.) Sometimes people snore only if they have had some
alcohol or may snore worse if they already snore.

"	If you have a sleeping partner, ask them if they notice
any snoring, leg movements and/or pauses in breathing. If
you have any concerns see your doctor.

"	The proper mattress and pillow can make the biggest
difference in preventing those nagging problems. Educate
yourself on the new advancements in mattress technology and
sleep systems that are designed to provide the right support
to minimize pressure to acceptable levels for different
body types and sleeping postures, maintaining back and spine
alignment. Shift the mindset from the one mattress fits all,
coils and springs to the luxury and convenience of air
mattress beds, adjustable beds, latex beds and memory foam
beds. Not only do these sleep systems provide the necessary
support and comfort, they give you the option to rearrange
the layers for a myriad of comfort levels to ensure you get
exactly what you want in a mattress and not, "just living"
with it.

OK, PRINT!

Now get started and work out while you sleep!!

Make the necessary changes that will help you feel refreshed
and have the energy to get through a busy day and the
stamina to spend quality time with the family at night. Give
yourself and your family the chance for you to "age
gracefully."

Catch my next articles that will cover advancements in
mattress technology.

About The Author

Neil Teasdale

Why Sleep On Coils and Springs When You Can Sleep On Air?
Shipping Is Big Industry Worldwide

by: David Arnold Livingston

Shipping has become a commercial enterprise for transferring or transporting of goods, cargoes and other materials from one location to the other through the sea by ships. Shipping is a vital part of the economy not only of certain countries but the whole world as well. Each country has its own standards and policies regarding shipping. For efficiency of shipping, some countries have special naval ships to make sure that the lawful goods will be successfully transported to the supposed location. The "merchant navies", as what it is called are made from tough durable materials to ensure the safety of the goods as they traversed through rough and huge waves. The merchant navies are carriers of international goods intended for shipping.

There are various sea vessels involved in shipping. It may include box boats or container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, ferries, cable layers, dredgers and barges. Container ships or box boats for shipping use huge containers to carry loads and cargoes. Savind space is of vital consideration for container ships. Extra big loads are handled through open top containers, platforms and flat racks. Loading and unloading of goods can be done using the right type of cranes. Most of the dry goods transported to different areas of the world are carried by container ships. Diesel engines provide the needed power to keep it going in shipping the goods from one point to the other.

Bulk carriers are deep sea vessels for shipping bulk goods like sugar, grains, rice and other bulky items. The big box-like structures situated on the deck is its notable features as compared with other shipping vessels. Tankers are vessels that are meant for shipping huge quantity of liquid hydrocarbon items like fuel, oil and gas around the world. Other tankers specialize in carrying chemicals like ammonia and chlorine. The largest tanker ship in the world is the Knock Nevis supertanker. Such shipping types can pose great threats on the environment if the liquid hydrocarbon spills on the sea or sinks down into the seabed. The type of tanker used would depend on the type of oil or materials carried which may include chemicals and crude oil.

Ferries are usually used as a passenger ship or boat together with the vehicles and goods carried by the passengers. As part of the public transport systems, ferries have scheduled shipping services. Cable layers, as what can be inferred from the name, are used to set cables for telecommunication, electricity and other related areas under the water. To prevent unwanted sediments from contaminating river beds or the bottom surfaces of harbors, dredgers are the commonly used vessels. The traditional barges together with tugboats are shipping vessels for rivers and canals. Barges are moved by tugboats to ship heavy goods but nowadays it only carries low value items since the capacity is not that tough. Barracks barge, Royal barge, liquid cargo barge, dry bulk cargo barge and railcar barge are the common types of shipping barges. Shipping must be done with utmost care to ensure that the goods will be delivered without any damages or defects.

About The Author

David Arnold Livingston is a successful business owner and recommends resources for shipping at:
http://www.freshipping.com/

davidarnoldlivingston@visioncoaches.com

Do It Yourself: Drip Irrigation System

by: Janeth Duque

Installing an irrigation system in your yard can help make maintenance easier. After all, you will not have to hand set sprinklers all day and try to remember where you have already watered. A sprinkler system, however, is not a project for the average do-it-yourselfer. This is because there are multiple precise calculations that need to be made, and a great deal of special handling necessary to properly set up the sprinklers. A drip irrigation system, on the other hand, can be set up fairly easily by most do-it-yourselfers and conserves water to boot.

A drip irrigation system consists of a series of tubes. These tubes have holes place in them at specific intervals, corresponding with the placement of your plants. Most of the time, these systems are placed under the soil, providing deep and efficient watering for the plants. These systems promote water conservation, as there is very little evaporation, the space between plants is not needlessly watered, and there is no wind to carry the water away before it reaches the roots. Plus, watering deeply means that you do not need to water your plants as often. While drip irrigation may not be especially helpful for lawns, it can be utilized to water some portions of the lawn. Root health is promoted by drip irrigation systems, and this means hardier plants that are more resistant to pests, drought, and disease.

Because they require the opening of holes along their length, drip irrigation systems are most often installed around flowers and shrubs, and even trees. This targeted approach to watering is more effective and more efficient that more traditional sprinkler irrigation. Additionally, it helps ensure that each of the landscape?s individual elements are properly watered and cared for. A drip irrigation system is unobtrusive and can be easily concealed so that the unsightly tubes do not mar the look of your property.

Installing drip irrigation is relatively simple. It is possible to create the system yourself, using hoses and making use of water available to your home, but it is much easier to use kits. There are kits available at most home improvement stores and warehouses that can help you better install a drip system. Most of the time, this installation only takes one day (or even less!). The kits come with easy to read instructions that clearly explain all of the necessary steps. There are some tools needed for the installation of your drip irrigation system, but they are generally tools that are commonly found in most households.

Not only can you install a drip irrigation system, but you can also make plant maintenance even easier by adding a timer to your system. We know that timers can be used with more traditional sprinkler systems, but many people are surprised that a timer can be used with a drip system. The timers are also available at home improvement stores and can be easily installed to go with your irrigation systems. Timers help you feel peace of mind knowing that you will not need to try to remember to water your plants. Additionally, they ensure that your plants will get the right amount of water at the right time. This can be valuable in helping you save time and money in costs associated with water usage.

It is good to note that drip irrigation systems can be used in conjunction with ?irrigation zones? in your landscape. Plants that have similar water needs should be planted in the same area so that they can be more efficiently targeted by watering. You can help clearly demarcate irrigation zones by establishing separate beds for plants that need certain amounts of water. Your plants will also be healthier, since you will not be over watering or under watering some plants because of the water needs of its neighbors. Also be sure to note that areas that face south need more watering than areas located in areas with northern exposure. When installing a drip irrigation system, you need to keep these things in mind to ensure that your plants are best cared for by your targeted plan. Drip irrigation is one of the best ways to make efficient use of your water resources, and when combined with the concept of irrigation zones can be even more efficient.

About The Author

Janeth Duque of Geeks On Steroids.
Concrete Curb Landscaping

by: Steve Joseph

The concrete curbing industry is currently experiencing a period of high growth as home owners look for new ways to customize and personalize their homes without over capitalizing their investment.

For the last ten years or more, many people have been able to take advantage of steady growth in the housing and property market, which has enabled more people than ever to become home owners. This growth in the housing market has been driven by a range of factors, one of them being the baby boomer generation, who have gained access to large amounts of superannuation, which has in-turn has stimulated the property market. Most economists would now agree that property and housing sector is due for a period of reduced growth, although other businesses are set to thrive in these conditions. The concrete curbing and edging business is one of these businesses. For more visit http://www.concrete4curbs.com/

Obviously, people who do not own their own home are not going to be interested in spending money on concrete curbs and edges to beautify their rented dwelling, and this is why the housing boom has been so pivotal for our industry. Concrete curbing business owners need home owners with which to build a clientele and today the number of homeowners is higher than ever before. More importantly, this new generation of homeowners are far more informed about the value of renovating and landscaping their homes. They understand the importance of what realtors call ?curb appeal?. Also they understand that it is very easy to overcapitalize your investment by spending up big on features that make little if any difference to a homes value.

This is where concrete curbs and concrete edging is enjoying growth in demand. Homeowners can see that for a small outlay, they can get significant improvement in the aesthetics of their outdoor areas. By getting concrete curbing around their garden beds and concrete edging along their paths they can make a significant change to the look of a garden without a big outlay.

With every demand for a service emerges a new business opportunity. Concrete curb businesses are in a niche due to the fact that the outlay required for starting the business, or startup costs are very low. Essentially the major costs are that of a concrete curbing machine, a trailer and an operator. To find out more about the initial startup capital required visit http://www.concrete4curbs.com/ . Clearly this kind of opportunity is well suited to an able-bodied person who is looking to take some control over their finances and working environment. Obviously it requires people to take a greater degree of responsibility, although the low start up an operating cost mean far less stress on a financial level. Concrete curbing and concrete edging is definitely an area worth looking into.

About The Author

Steve Joseph is a regular contributor to http://www.concrete4curbs.com and permission to reproduce this article is given only on the basis that all links remain active and intact.

Utility Trailers: Different Types And Uses

by: Olga Sen

Are you planning a long haul trip or moving house with your family to another city? And are you a bit worried about the management of your furniture and possessions? How will you carry items like beds, cupboards, your play station, clothes, and all the other things? How would you manage? Well the answer is simple, get yourself a utility trailer.

A utility trailer is an engine-less and a motor-less trailer used to carry items. It is pulled by a powered vehicle with engine. It might be your car or might be a truck. . Utility trailers are used all over the world for transportation of heavy goods for long distances. Trailers can carry large number of goods at a time. Utility trailers are used for transporting almost anything. They can be used as bike trailers, car trailers, truck trailers or snowmobile trailers. Let?s discuss some aspects of utility trailers here.

Types of Utility trailers

Utility trailers are basically available as enclosed and open utility trailers. Open utility trailers are the one which do not provide coverage to the cargo from external elements. If weather is not a problem for you, buying an open utility trailer would be a wise and economical choice. These open trailers usually range from about $900 to $2500.

You can buy a utility trailer if you are planning to start a small landscaping business. You can carry your essential equipments quite easily in this trailer. Open utility trailers are also lighter as compared to enclosed trailers. On the other hand enclosed utility trailers provide security to your cargo. They combine essential features of weather protection and theft protection. These trailers are lockable to give your cargo maximum protection. These trailers cost around $1600-$5000. There are several other types of utility trailers available to you.

Boat Trailers

Small Box Trailers

Flat Bed Trailers

Stock Trailers

Van Trailers

Semi Trailers? if pulled by a power unit of less than 26,000 GVW

Pole Trailers? if pulled by a power unit of less than 26,000 GVW

Horse Trailers

Utility trailers are made, keeping in mind some basic things like strength, towing stability, versatility and flexibility. By versatility of a utility trailer we mean that it should be able to accommodate various load equipments like snowmobile, automobiles and much more. By flexibility we mean that it should be adjustable to varying hauling requirements. Basically a trailer should have enough strength and durability to carry the requisite amount of load which is required, without too many hassles.

Utility Trailer- sizes and elements

Utility trailers are available in different sizes and shapes as per your needs. The sizes of utility trailers vary extensively such as 5 x 8/10, 5.3 x 8, 6.4 x 16 and many more. Manufacturers from all over the world make 5x 10 utility trailers for general usage.

The size of the trailer bed is 5 ft. x 8/10 ft long. Maximum capacities of trailer beds vary. A general capacity of a 5 x 10 utility trailer is 3500 pounds. The capacities of trailers vary as they differ in size. It could go up to 24,000 pounds. This weight is inclusive of the trailer weight.

Utility trailers are made up of steel or aluminum. They have a floating axle, which allows them to adjust to different load requirements. It also contains a long tongue for vehicle maneuverability and spacing. A utility trailer also includes heavy-duty spring suspensions, wheels, tires, safety chain and side lighting. A utility trailer has an essential back bumper. Trailer brakes form an essential part of utility trailers. Though the usage of a trailer is dependent on load and the tow vehicle, still they make a considerable part of utility trailers. Trailer lights, rear lights and running lights are also an important component of utility trailers.

Before Buying a Utility Trailer

Buying a utility trailer certainly fulfills your needs, but what exactly is your need. The first thing before buying a utility trailer is discovering your need? why you want to buy it.

You should consider the type of braking system you want for your utility trailer. You can choose from the electric braking and surge braking.

You should carefully check the trailer for bolts. If a trailer is joined by a good number of bolts, you should not consider buying it; instead consider buying a trailer which is welded together.

Further ask a lot of question on various aspects of utility trailers from the dealer. Clarify any concerns with your dealer to ensure that you are buying the right trailer for you. And enjoy hassle-free load transportation.

About The Author

Olga Sen writes articles on a number of different topics.
